Description

The Ypsilon MCL series of moving coil step-up transformers are used to amplify the low-level output signal from a moving coil cartridge, bringing it to the appropriate level to drive a moving magnet phono pre-amplifier.
The MCL series transformers are large size single C-core double coil transformers using a proprietary amorphous core material. Special winding techniques were developed in order to minimize inter-winding capacitances and maintain a wide frequency response. They are reference standard and optimised to be as sonically invisible as possible.

The transformers are shielded with mu-metal and are potted in 10mm thick soft iron nickel coated enclosures providing immunity from outside magnetic fields and a quiet and noise-free performance. The MCL transformers have been developed in conjunction with the VPS-100 phono pre-amplifier but can be used with most other phono preamplifiers and with most of the moving coil cartridges available in the market. For optimum performance the MCL transformers can be used within a specific range of cartridge output levels.

GAIN
• The MCL-5 provides 5 times transformation ratio or 14db of gain.
• The MCL-10 provides 10 times transformation ratio or 20db of gain.
• The MCL-16 provides 16 times transformation ratio or 24db of gain.
• The MCL-20 provides 20 times transformation ratio or 26db of gain.

CARTRIDGE MATCHING
• MCL-5 may be used with cartridges from 0.8-1.2mV.
• MCL-10 may be used with cartridges from 0.4-0.6mV.
• MCL-16 may be used with cartridges from 0.3-0.4mV.
• MCL-20 may be used with cartridges from 0.2-0.3mV.

INPUT IMPEDANCE
When terminated in 47k which is the standard input impedance of MM phono preamps the equivalent input impedance of each one would be:
• MCL-5 2 kOhm
• MCL-10 500 Ohm
• MCL-16 200 Ohm
• MCL-20 140 Ohm
If additional loading is needed, it can be done through the parallel input RCA connectors.

HIGHER PERFORMANCE VERSIONS
The standard MCL series is considered to be reference standard and will provide superb performance for most systems. However, as Ypsilon are transformer specialists, over the years they have been asked to produce even higher performing step-up transformers for extremely discerning owners of very high performing analogue systems. From these projects, some further versions of the MCL have evolved and are now part of the product offering. As you move through the range, the sonic benefits are even greater purity and transparency. The range can be summarized as follows:
